I put this in the non-music category for a reason

The broadest definition of "avant garde" is anything innovative and creative. But the term is used today for a particular genre of mostly industrial noise. A simple search for the words "avant garde music" will reveal a lot of weird stuff from weird people. For example, a 3 nanosecond search gave me this as the top result:

Here are the top most recent comments of listeners. I had to post this because I agree with most of the comments.

I can kinda see how some people may like this (I personally don't), but what turns me off about it is the community; whom think they're somehow gods among men for liking this music. Maybe not all are like that, but the ones I've met are.

So dookeyman, if you don't mind, please point us to some "avant garde" with a melodic structure that fits the actual definition of "music", and enlighten all the poor idiots who know nothing.

I can't take this noise long enough to find anything?

RUI Musik wrote:Ted, I know nothing about the artists you listed, nor the genre as it is known today. I do know that King Crimson, Roxy Music, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Frank Zappa and many others all produced what was thought of back in the day as being avant garde music. Now we just think of it as music.

Please listen to KC's "Fracture" from "Starless and Bible Black".

Loved King Crimson!!!

...and every artist that was "avant garde" back in the day.

But that genre has been nothing but noise for the last 2 decades. I thought it was reclassified literally as "Industrial Noise"

Stop anytime you want. I tire of your passive-aggressive arrogance. You are NOT my mother and I will continue saying what I think, whether you like it or not.

I never said that agreeing with people I disagree with is the point, I said talking with them is. I respect people who have different views, but you're attempts to control every discussion you're in doesn't work for me. The free exchange of ideas depends on allowing points of diverse views.

Avant garde today means "noise" and those who grind metal parts in a blender have no special status over REAL music.

Furthermore, for all the education you claim to have had, you are an AMATEUR who could gain a little wisdom by listening more than you talk. But go ahead...I'm not trying to stop you.

here's a cpl of things to consider...."avante garde" music is like any other genre. there's good and bad and there's our personal tastes (and certainly what we're USED to listening to) that come into play when we make our judgement(s).

then there's "definition" of WHAT is "avante garde". see......i wouldn't classify that Bartok piece as "avante garde". (loved it btw)

i think it comes down largely to how much "tension" (dissonance...from harmony, melody, and rhythm) we like and are willing to accept in our music. i don't wish to be anesthetized w my listening choices but i also don't spend much of my listening time listening to "tense" music. i can appreciate much of it and the level of skill there, and i do appreciate "ugly beauty" in moderate doses....

ted, you might check out some eric dolphy. "Out To Lunch" is maybe his best known album and considered a classic. all the players involved are GREAT musicians who are all recognized as very capable "straight ahead" players. so anyone who might offhandedly dismiss these guys as charlatans is mistaken.

is it "tense music"? yeah, it is. but there's plenty of structure, melody, and well thought out harmony. there's no way that this is just a bunch of fakers making noise on their instruments.....but i do understand how it might SOUND that way to some.

I had thought Weather Report was the first. Hmmm...this is years earlier.

Actually I find this music quite awesome! But we'd call that genre "acid jazz" or "jazz fusion" today. Also note the year, and that is the point...

The genre known as "avant garde" today hasn't seen a melody in twenty years. It's mostly people making noise because they can't play an instrument. In Dallas, they are all independently wealthy people who can afford to spend money on something no one will ever buy.

I mean, I could show you an album with 45 minutes of scrubbing a washboard that claims to be avant garde.

jookeyman wrote:Ted- regardless of your personal attacks I STILL LOVE YOU AS A BROTHER.
Like Haley, I love everyone on this site (except Mr. Willie).

Later. :D

I appreciate your soft response and accept that as an olive branch, of sorts.

OK then brother, hear me...

I have nothing against you, but I am tired of you trying to tell me how to act. I had a relationship with the people on this board for 6 years before you arrived to "teach" me. Most people here know I love them, and they actually like fighting with me because my disagreement is rarely personal.

However, you've made several insulting statements towards me, presuming to be more noble because you've done relatively nothing in comparison. Then you get upset when I respond without the religious hyper-spiritual window dressing.

You dismiss my professional experience, my "avant garde" accomplishments in Christian music, and "avant garde" work in virtual reality. None of that bothered me. I'm secure in knowing your opinion doesn't change the facts.

But when you start laying down the rules for how you and I interact don't expect me to comply just because you claim some super-spiritual authority. If you can't stand me, then ignore all you want. You won't be the first or last.

And when you say something I disagree with, or have a different view on, you can expect to hear it. Don't tell me in your polite way to shut up again, and we'll be cool. Kapish?

I care not if you think me arrogant. People who really know me, know better. I am a straight-talking grouchy rude a-hole who speaks his mind and pushes back on bullies.

That's different.

There you go again....

I find it hard to believe you're sincere. Seems more like a passive-aggressive tactic of control. Just accept that you're not my mama. I wasn't always following her rules either, btw.

Jeff, thanks for the link. I would have been 4 years old when Eric Dolphy did this. I confess that jazz is way over my head as a non-educated player, though I do love to sing it. I'm about 24 minutes into this album and it reminds me of the Klezmatics. You ever listen to them?

But I had always heard that Weather Report was the first "jazz fusion" or "acid jazz" band. What, if anything, was their breakthrough contribution if not?
