RUI Musik wrote:Dayne, I'm not sure 3 hours is going to be sufficient for teaching someone 5 original songs, have them write parts for them and then record the tunes. I would suggest getting Mark a rough recording or at least some lead sheets so he is somewhat familiar with what you're trying to do before you go to the studio. We recorded four tracks on Tuesday in about four hours, and we all knew them and had them well-rehearsed. And that was just the rhythm tracks, no overdubs. But it depends how picky you are about the results. If you're a perfectionist you might be lucky to get one done! Best of luck guys.

thanks jimmy, I would also like to hire you, and/or Slacker for additional guitar tracks, but you two live too far away, sooner or later, I need to get my photographs taken for my VA heath plan card, and I eventually need to drive up to Mark's area, and thought, why not kill two birds with one stone?

Please excuuuuuuuuuussse Me, as Steve Martin would often to say

I thought I was helping you and a couple of others who wanted us to quit talking in the general (non music related ) chat section of BandMix for a month or so and go over to the General (music chat only) section to talk music so that section of BandMix wouldn't die out for lack of input. At least that is the reason presented at that time. I do believe I heard a lot of complaints (whining) relating to something to that effect.
I was under the impression that a real actual music post would still be eagerly welcomed in that section. Apparently the problem has been remedied. That's great! . You know me, I never mean to ruffle any feathers, just trying to help out. :)

..____________________________________________________

So I had been mixing "Billie Jean" for a day or two. I’d do a mix. ..... Say I was up to mix number 2.... (At that time I was mixing onto 1/2” analogue.) I thought it was killer!!!

I called MJ, Quincy and Rod into the control room and played mix 2 for them. They loved it!!! They were all dancing and carrying on like crazy!!! Smiles all around! Then Michael slipped out of the control room, turned around and motioned to me to follow him... Then he whispered to me, “Please Bruce, it’s perfect, but turn the Bass up just a tiny bit, and do one more mix, please....” I said to him...”OK Smelly, no problem”...

(When we were recording “Off The Wall”, Quincy gave Michael the nickname of “Smelly” because when Michael liked a groove, he’d call it “Smelly Jelly.” Also Michael doesn’t curse, and when MJ wants to say a bad word he’ll simply call it “Smelly”... The name has stuck...)

Then I went back into the control room to add Michael’s tiny bit of bass to my mix... Quincy pulled me over into the corner and said “Please Svensk... “(Svensk is Quincy’s nickname for me. It means “Swedish Man” in Swedish... When you have a genuine Quincy Jones nickname like ‘Svensk” - You are truly honored....) Q said to me.... “Add a little garlic salt to the snare and the kick. Just a squirt!!!”) so I went back into the control room and added a little garlic salt to the snare and the kick. Just a squirt!!! Now I was up to mix 20 on "Billie Jean".

Well, this went on for about a week. Soon I was up to mix 91!!! I had a stack of 1/2 inch tapes almost to the ceiling!!! I would do a few mixes, we’d listen... Then do a few more. We had it PERFECT!!! We thought we had a really ‘HOT’ mix on “Billie Jean”. I played Mix 91 for the boys... Everybody smiled... but Quincy had one of his funny looks on his face...

I thought.... Hmmmm.... Oh, Oh....

Quincy said “You know Svensk, just for the fun of it, can we listen to one of your earlier mixes???” My heart jumped because I knew that my earlier mixes were dynamite!!! Then Quincy said, “Let’s hear mix number 2!!!” Oh WOW!!!! Hallelujah!!! I love mix 2!!!!

We listened to mix 2... IT WAS SLAMMIN’!!! EVERYONE IN THE STUDIO WAS GROOVIN’ AND DANCIN’ and HAPPY, and actin’ IGNORANT!!!!

If its electric bass (as opposed to upright acoustic) you can record it DI, no studio needed. 90% of bass (except hard rock/heavy metal) is recorded that way these days. Even in a studio, a good engineer will DI the bass (as well as mic up the amp).

dayne, i appreciate the words of praise and confidence in my abilities. (even IF they are unwarranted!)

i would like to point out that although it's wonderful having access to the best quality recording equip available....that is in no way a guarantee of getting a good recording that will please you.

you recently complimented me on the recording quality of the cds i sent you a while back. those were recorded at my "home studio" on outdated technology....namely a couple of old ADATs.

all the electric bass trks were recorded direct into my old CARVIN board (no DI). and all the electric gtr sounds went direct too using a JOHNSON J Station.

acoustic instruments like gtrs, mandolin, dobro, and upright bass were of course recorded with mics.

and come to think of it.....i even recorded the vibes trks direct using the pickup system on the vibes!

Yep - what Mark says. These days with digital recording, going striaght into the interface or board with the bass is the standard method. Mics used to record bass amps are expensive, as are rooms that can tame the standing waves from a big bass cabinet. Amp sims and plug-ins are cheap or free and unlike an electric guitar through a tube amp compared to one being DIed, its very hard to hear the difference in sound.

Isn't this the wrong page for this discussion, OR, is this the only way any liberal moron can disrupt all serious discussions?

ALL of you have COMPLAINED in a VOCIFEROUS manner when stuff was posted in an area that was not a musical post.

FCU!
