Residents in Indiana qualifying for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program were at risk of losing those those benefits now that lawmakers have begun considering reinstating a previously suspended requirement to receive benefits.
The requirement for able-bodied adults to work or obtain an education was suspended during the recession but the requirement is being reinstated, according to WXIN.
The welfare work requirement, which will be reinstated in several states, complies with federal requirements implemented in 1996.
Residents in Indiana who cannot document the fact that they’re working 20 hours a week or taking part in a government-approved training program for 20 hours a week might lose SNAP benefits come November.
Individuals could lose up to $125 each month on average, reported The Indianapolis Star.
The requirement was actually reinstated in July, but those affected had a three-month grace period to either enroll in a training program or find a job.
As usual, there are some liberals in the state claiming this change will do harm and leave people starving in the streets.
State Sen. Jim Merritt, R-Indianapolis, was pleased about the change.
“These are folks that should be out in the workforce that should be looking for work,” the senator said. “These are able-bodied people who don’t have dependents and we need to make sure that we encourage them to look for work, find education and monitor them.” (H/T Opposing Views)
Merritt is right. Working and getting an education are important in the real world. Having one, or both, increases one’s chance for success — or at least for self-reliance.
