Licensing laws for live music

Do the licensing laws as applied to playing live music at venues still stand.
I was under the impression that to perform live with more than a duo the venue has to pay hefty sums into the government coffers.
I think the figure as it stands is about £50,000.00 per year which many venue owners are nwilling to pay. Does anyone have an accurate figure or an update on this law?
I've noticed that a lot of smaller venues are starting to put on live perfomances of more than three people disregarding this tax
Its a wonder why the musicians union hasn't organised a protest about this law which has done a lot to kill of the live entertainment industry in Britain and keep many musicians out of pocket.[/b]
