Crawdad (folk song, author unknown)

You get a line and I'II get a pole, honey,
You get a line and I'II get a pole, babe.
You get a line and I'II get a pole,
And we'll go down to the Crawdad hole,
Honey, sugar baby, mine,

Get up old man, you slept too late, honey, (2x)
Get up old man, you slept too late,
Last piece of crawdad's on your plate,
Honey, sugar baby mine.

Get up old woman, you slept too late, honey, (2x)
Get up old woman, you slept too late,
Crawdad man done passed )-our gate,
Honey, sugar baby mine.

Along come a man with a sack on his back, honey, (2x)
Along come a man with a sack on his back,
Packin' all the crawdads he can pack,
Honey, sugar baby mine.

What you gonna do when the lake goes dry, (2x)
What you gonna do when the lake goes dry,
Sit on the bank and watch the crawdads die,
Honey, sugar baby mine.

What you gonna do when the crawdads die, honey? (2x)
What you gonna do when the crawdads die,
Sit on the bank until I cry,
Honey, sugar baby mine.

I heard the duck say to the drake, honey, (2x)
I heard the duck say to the drake,
There ain't no crawdads in this lake,
Honey, sugar baby mine.

Nuffin' at all wrong with folk music. That's where it all started anyway. Plain folks doing what they can do. Simple is good.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. In fact, as soon as I can get to the studio at me drummer's place, I WILL!

I've played live doing this for decades.

Thanks for the bump, Rick.

For me, God rock is folk music! Just plain folk playin what we feel. It's 2008, and it dont have to be hickory smoked to be "folk".

Hello all,

In the UK the folk world is very different to the rock world; quite clique and keen to be known to be different... folk guys usually bring their own pewter tankard to the pub to drink beer from, though this is I believe just a showy thing connected to the presence of folk music, and when the same guys go for a beer with their mates another night they drink out of glasses with the rest.
Folk in the USA sounds like it is bridged to rock by country music, so there is probably more of a cross over between the two.
Folk in the UK carries associations with nightmarish things like the horror that is morris dancing etc!
I myself once sang at a folk festival in my late teens... I feel okay now at 52, but for a long time I had recouring nightmares!

Hello guys,
I quite enjoyed the song of yours I opened.
I don't think there are quite as many openings for religous music in the secular UK; even our born again pop icon Cliff Richard has to keep it pretty low key not to be thought a nut!
Did you guys go for it as something that might bring musical openings, or do you actually believe in god, as indeed quite a few people do even over this side of the pond!
Good luck from Mark...........

I just wanted to say that I love the title to this thread.

I play a lot of folk music, & I like it as much as anything else that I do, musically.

My appologies Sanshouheil,
I can't think why now, but can remember I was feeling a bit cheeky when I wrote that mail last week... and it was before I learned you have to be a bit more careful on American websites than in the UK... reading it again now it doesn't mean that much.
In fact thinking now; I believe I wrote it before I started listening to your songs, and have subsequently become quite a fan.
Perhaps I should say that some years ago I poached the right side of my brain and have frontal lobe disfunction and various cognitive defecits... least that's what the doctors say; frequently on looking back, it's not too clear what I was trying to get across when I said something... if indeed it was anything!
For me it has been quite fun and liberating, I have fewer inhibitions than before the accident... friends say I am permanently irritating; fortunately my mates are all bikers, flyers, and musicians, so partially mad themselves and it works out okay.
Cheers guys,
Mark...................

Hello Andrew,
I keep seeing posts and not understanding them... in the end it makes more sense to ask and look dumb!
So what is ROFL please?
Thanks,
Mark...............
