This was actually a good survey about making a living as a musician. The questions were relavant to most anyone that makes money playing music. It made me reevaluate some of the things that I'm doing (and some of the things that I'm not doing).

I didn't meet some of the criteria either...

Here's how I see it though: by definition, a professional musician makes money by playing music. Since I do this on a part-time basis, and work is kind of sparse right now, I took the survey not only go give information, but also to gather new ideas from the questions on the survey. I see the questions asked here as an opportunity to help me improve my business because the questions wouldn't be there if other pro musicians weren't doing this kind of stuff, right?! I'm starting a blog, doing additional networking, and making more efforts based on the questions and potential responses on the survey.

I am not in to surveys but there is no living to be made playing in San Diego (or southern California). The market is flooded with free musicians.

EVEYWHERE !

But ya know I am probably as much a part of the problem.
We'll play for donations.
We'll play for food.
We'll play for fun.
We'll play!
It's about the message. For NKF it has to be about the message.
So I'll just stand out here in the cold, and jam.

Everybody wanted to become a Rockstar or a club owner. Now there are just too damned many mediocre and even shitty bands out there and they know their value; very little! So they will play for that. I searched myspace for "Kentucky bands" 3 years ago and there were 10,000. Club owner's eat it up. they can get FREE bands just by giving them the door. When I was just starting out you had to be GOOD to get a gigg. Even if you had a bunch of friends and follower's, if you sucked or were just ok, you didn't get booked! And if you did get booked, you got PAID!
Now they'll let your mamma's band play if they're free!

#1 problem for band's today: Club Owners!
