Time for an ol' fashioned roast!

Ok, I have been asked to write a modern Gregorian chant opener for a heavy goth like group (I will call them the Batlings for short) They want to do something like Evanescence or Within Temptation who both use a lot of classical music in the backgrounds of their music...except they also wanted an opener with the pipe organ. The vocals are the synth in the beginning. Before I keep going with this project I would like some feedback. That would be fabu. Just keep in mind this is on a cheap keyboard.

(no garageband was used in the making of this music) LOL

I guess it would help if you knew where the song was. On my profile page
bandmix.com/jessicam
it's the first song

Very Nice! The tremolo imho at the very beginning is a little too much; a pair of Leslies would do nicely (I know you said it's a cheap-o keyboard -that's what I've got  ) but really nice musical construction/ composition! Deep rich chords. Sounds good to me :D

Not bad at all. How familiar are you with the Gregorian Chant? My brother-in-law used to do them for pay in the DC area. I'll look around & see if I have any of his recordings. As I recall, the ones I heard were a capella, but I could be misremembering. (I really don't care for him much, so it shouldn't be surprizing if I forget any- & everything he does. It's okay though. I don't think he cares much for me, either.)

I disagree with the Leslie, though. It wouldn't give that churchy feel at all. Pipe-organ is more the sound you'd want, I do believe.

I am semi familiar with Gregorian Chant. I studied it a bit in college and when I started working on this project I went to the Mount Angel Monastery to refresh my memory.

Jessica,
That organ voice sounds fine to me. Maybe a bit more reverb.

Your vocals are excellent, however, I believe they deserve to be recorded better. Seems like the piano dominates the mix at times.

Thanks, I will play with the reverb some more. =)

Hi there Jessica,
The song is awesome! I can so hear
Within Temptation or Nightwish doing this.
I love the organ sound, very horror filmish hehe.
I think everything sounds great. I wasn't into the
xylophone sound at 1st and thought a piano would
sound better there but then again I thought it sounds
more original that way...cause all these goth/symphonic
bands use a lot of piano.
I can't wait to hear your voice on this.
You have an awesome voice, I am totally into
Sarah Brightman! She is my fave female vocalist.
I have a song written that has a gothy feel to it and is kind of
Evanescence, just thought maybe if you wanted to write
lyrics and do vocals to it that would be awesome!
I can send it to you and see what you think.
I had it featured on a horror movie site.
Anyhow I love the song idea you have.
Keep on writing those great tunes.

Eric

Thank you FearsEnd.

The Xylophone in the beginning is actually eventually going to be the soprano line, I found some Latin text that is going to be perfect with the theme that they are going for, so I will be able to complete this project on my day off.
As for collaboration on a project, that would be really neat. =)

Actually, it sounds like I am being paid good money to write this for a group and would like some professional feed back.

Yet another example of why he's so well-loved & respected! The Cap is the consumate gentleman, isn't he? I love to see that respect he shows for everyone, no matter their musical ability, their genre, their gender, or what have you. This just shows us all how far intelligence, when it's combined with education, can take you, doesn't it? Kudos, Cap, for receiving both the "asshole of the month" trophy AND the "get over yourself" plaque awards again this month!

Someone needs to send this guy to charm school. I'd donate a few bucks to the cause, myself, if I thought him to be in any way "worthwhile."

Stuff yerself, junior. Your profile is lame, your music is lame, and so is your attitude & personality. Find some manners somewhere, & learn how to use them.

When was the last time anyone asked you to write something for them, Cap? I doubt it's ever happened to such a self-involved, incompetant, juvenile, inadequate hack as yourself.

Save your money Philby, I don't think there's any hope for that one.

Well, we know one thing for certain...he cannot be this obnoxious in person, cuz he'd have been killed or permanently hospitalized by age 22, if he were. You just gotta have a certain kind of respect for a guy that hides behind a keyboard to spew his excreta from the bowel that is his brain from the safety & anonymity of his home office. Yeah, he has the appeal of a lower intestinal tract, for most of us. I'm just gonna call him "chittlin-head," from now on.

Anyway, good job, Jessica. I enjoyed it, & actually listened all the way through, which I don't do for everything I hear on here.

Thank you. I just sent the recording to the group yesterday and they loved it. They are suppose to send me a copy of how it sounds with everything else. Crossing my fingers. :D
