Dead Kennedys - Pull My Strings
I'm tired of self respect
I can't afford a car
I wanna be a prefab superstar

I wanna be a tool
Don't need no soul
Wanna make big money
Playing rock and roll

I'll make my music boring
I'll play my music slow
I ain't no artist, I'm
a business man

No ideas of my own

I won't offend
Or rock the boat
Just sex and drugs
And rock and roll

Drool, drool, drool,
drool, drool, drool
My Payola!
Drool, drool, drool,
drool, drool, drool
My Payola!

You'll pay ten bucks to see me
On a fifteen foot high stage
Fatass bouncers kick the sh*t
Out of kids who try to dance

If my friends say
I've lost my guts
I'll laugh and say
That's rock and roll

But there's just one problem

[Chorus]
Is my cock big enough
Is my brain small enough
For you to make me a star
Give me a toot, I'll
sell you my soul
Pull my strings and I'll go far

And when I'm rich
And meet Bob Hope
We'll shoot some golf
And shoot some dope

Is my cock big enough?
Is my brain small enough?
[Repeat chorus, etc. etc.]

ok answer me this then (and I as I said I learned to sing long ago, Mom made me learn Mario Lanza stuff)

do you use a harmonizer with a guitar or do you play all the parts of a harmonized solo yourself at once, say second guitar with your feet... I imagine I can fart in tune but my pronunciation of vowels won't be crisp.

if you play anything but an acoustic instrument I imagine fx are being used. I don't consider it a trade off for having people that can sing to work with but in some conditions that isn't always posible. to resort to insults and little name calling isn't really any part of a debate though, that's kind of childish

Try getting the harmony-challenged members of your new band to get out and listen to other harmony signers, instead of falling back onto technology. It's really not that hard. And suggest they pay attention to different kinds of harmony singing. Close harmony - the original Carter Family. Bluegrass-style 3-part harmony - just about any decent bluegrass band can give good harmony with the lead voice being considered 'alto', any voice beneath that is 'baritone', and any voice above that is 'tenor', regardless of the individual's vocal range. I'm a female contralto, and usually end up singing 'baritone' because I can sing below most of the tenor 'grassers I know.

And from a personal observation, I can 'feel' when I'm on harmony - it's an aligning of the vibration of the tones. It just feels right. I can remember picking up the 'pitch' of machines when I was a kid, singing a note in their pitch, then singing a harmony in counterpoint. Practice, practice, practice - there's no substitute for it.

And get them to try the old finger-in-one-ear thing to sing harmonies a capella - ya never know what might help.

Good luck - hope it works out well for y'all!

Roland makes a really nice one and I'll use it in a minute.

Let's explore why.

I record four-part harmonies on my recordings meaning, I don't have the money to pay four chicks to get up there and harmonize in my already 3-piece band, and honestly, four chicks in my band will look pretty stupid standing up there with the way I have things organized. It wouldn't work.

So yeah, I'll cheat in a heartbeat and it'll sound good.

I know I can sing, so anyone who doesn't like it can pay for me to have 4 background singers and stash them someplace where they won't be in my way, or they can bugger off with their "natural" bullshit. Technology is to be utilized to enhance production.

It's simple.

I totally agree Chay. In that all the instruments in the world can be hooked
up to all kinds of electronic gear that changes and bends their sound to
the players delight. Yet when the talk of altering the human voice comes up.
Everyone acts like you are slapping GOD in the face.

A harmonizer isn't changing your voice. It is adding additional voices to
yours in many different configurations. In fact it can be as bad for your
as good. It plays off of your vocals. If you suck the harmonizing voices
behind you will suck also. In the hands of a good singer it can be magic.
The human voice is a different and special instrument and is subject to
many things that can change it and cause it to not work properly. Many
more things than phyisical instruments. The voice is a biological
instrument.

As I believe most musicians know. A lot of players just cant sing well.
The vocalist finds himself out front to fend for himself in many cases.
They need help and a harmonizer can represent help for a good singer.
Chorus and Reverb are not enough, not for a multi song performance.
So all should get over it and realize a singers job is not easy.

Ray enlightened me to the fact he has ordered "effects" for the vocals.
Apparently a BOSS product from what I recall of the conversation.

Be interesting to see what we're able to do with it.

There is nothing wrong with adding weapons to your arsenal ... as long as you don't lose touch with the basics.

I am really excited about our video projects. Even though the financing for the props / equipment is slow, it's OK. Gives us time to test and research each step of the way.
Ray is learning his camera & effects programs at a rapid pace.
And his green screen skills are also improving rapidly.
I have devised a simple but effective way to divert the stream from our fog machine into two different pathways. One straight up and concentrated, and the other more diffuse and aimed at the floor. Second machine is on it's way along with some more lighting effects options. I'll have a fog machine on each side of Steve-o's trap and have devised a simple foot switch so I can activate them simultaneously.

Will be really interesting year I think.

Oh-oh, I acrually said it: the "p" word . . .

The lights set up on a truss are pretty easy to move around.
Though mostly purchased for video enhancement.

I purchased relatively inexpensive LED system.
Sound active, instead of having a control board.
It's hard enough to juggle schedules / personalities for a five piece band.
I don't want to throw a lights & sound man into the mix at this juncture.

I will however purchase a series of 120v / 20amp foot switches so that I can have some control over which lights are on while I play.
Between that, the dual fog machines, and my board, it's a good thing I been doing Kung Fu for >20 years.
Or I might have to study Tap Dancing . 8)

I respectfully disagree.

Yes some people are born with awesome natural talents.
Some people can "learn to sing" and still more can "learn to sing" better with training. ( I'm in the should not sing at all category, so I don't LOL )

Harmonizers / vocal effects boxes are a great way to add depth and
" thicken " that "wall of sound " bands like to create.

Otherwise just sing A Capella ... because adding and instrument to your voice IMO is no different than adding some effects.
