I am looking to relocate in the Spring just to try something new and am curious as to where would be good as a local musician. I always hear the obvious like Seattle or LA, etc. I am looking for a city that is less obvious so if your area is hot, post it here!

Believe it or not, PHILADELPHIA,PA is a great city to get onto something. The city and it's surrounding are filled with such diversity that no matter what your genre, you will find something. I know cause that's where I and many of my musician friends got their starts. And just look up Philadelphia musicians and actors etc. You will be amazed.

I'm not so sure location is your issue. Maybe it's your approach.

who says that the best things right out in front of you at all times. Sometimes you find an alley bar that the best food and drinks you've ever had. You would never be able to find of course because of it's location. Be sure who you're getting is the best.

Athens GA was fun, but talk about a tough crowd. I lived there in the early nineties. I was the singer for a guitar, bass, drums 4 piece. We got a review that called us Rush meets the Spin Doctors. I took that to mean your musicians are talented but wannabe and your singer is TOO pop.

Depending on what kind of music you play.... The Tri Cities of Tenn is a good place to start.

I would have to say that the twin Cities...(Minneapolis MN, really) are where it's at! I lived there for over a decade and there is no other place, bar none, that offers places to gig for all types of music! If you can make it through the winter, twin city people make up for it in the summer...believe me. There is a way strong venue for regae, hip hop, punk fusion, and truly original music. I wish that I still lived there...sigh

Don't bother with the Eastern Panhandle of WV, either...lots of good musicians, but nowhere to play & if you DO find a place they don't pay much at all.

Plus it's a veritable radio wasteland! The only new music we get to hear around here is (c)rap & modern scale-singing r&b. Very BOOOOOORING!

the heart of rock n roll is in Cleveland (at least that's what I'm told to believe)

but for real, lots of smaller venues to get started, a bar practically on every corner and many of them have music on weekends. I've gotten gigs before by walking into a bar with a demo and buying the owner a shot. a lot of the music clubs around here too like booking shows with as many bands as they can fit. Makes for some boring shows but gets you the exposure and experience.
