It also helps to be the bass player/sound engineer which is my situation. They know not to push my buttons or I'll push their shiny mute button on their channel...
Then again, my 2 guitar players in my cover/working band are very exploratory and get bored easy with the same songs, they want flavor. We play a whole range of stuff from The Beatles, Tom Petty, John Mayer, Muse, Tonic, Pink Floyd, 311, Boston, The Police, etc.... I'll be darn if I ever play the same bass line twice. Some of those songs beg for jams, others are so boring to play that I see how melodic and over the top I can play without actually sounding like it's over the top, but complimentary. When I'm on the edge, thats usually when one of them looks over, grins, and eggs me to keep going.
Then again, it's a cover band... Why not have some fun?
