Ambient Symphonic Metal

What would this sound like to you?
Do you think it's possible to successfully marry symphonic metal (i.e. Nightwish, Within Temptation, Kamelot, etc) with a more ambient sound?
What would be the keys to making this appeal to any fan base in the US?

I am 100% open to and appreciative of your feedback. xo

Oh crap ANOTHER genre!

I have no idea what this would sound like. After awhile all the descriptions just lose their effectiveness for me.

I mean, when I think 'metal,' I think harsh, driving rhythms. When I think 'ambient,' I think moodier stuff.

I've heard some symphonic metal. Good stuff. Now, tone it down & make it spacey, & you lose the harshness what makes it metal, unless, of course, you're bouncing back & forth & yanking the audience this way & that.

Perhaps it's a sneakier sound than metal that you're looking for, that holds to the power, but in a more underlying way.

I'm sure the Goth types would go for that, if no one else. It's being done by quite a few bands, too.

Yeah, I've been working on my neo-transitory-'lectro-soapstone-swing.

Hey...I didn't mean to offend, honestly!

I'm just over-inundated with genre labels, lately. You gotta admit, some if the above was kinda funny, though!

That label could easily apply to King Crimson. They are ambient, symphonic, metal and so much more all at the same time.

Which brings us full circle to "progressive."

Is it so necessary to further describe it to the point that you know everything about it, & thus don't need to listen to it?

interesting feedback from all -thanks! I assure you online forum feedback doesn't offend me in the slightest, so no worries. =) Hmm. I guess I also don't get bent out of fundamentalist shape about genre descriptions, so hadn't really thought that much about calling it ambient symphonic metal (basically, symphonic metal, which is a very true and legit sub-genre, just more mellow - no screams, growls, etc. I need to still think about what 'ambient' would mean, but it was simply a descriptive adjective and not a sub-sub-sub genre of anything. HA

I still have a lot to flesh out for this project, but am jamming around with different people to flesh it out, and I'm loving it. Keep on rocking on! (to whatever blows your hair back, and call it whatever tickles your fancy!)

I am really glad you liked it.

I got the double CDs for my husband and I listen to it more than he does. The name of that double CD is S & M. Surprisingly, my son loves this CD and he jacked it for a few years. The guy who is conducting the orchestra wrote the orchestral arrangement and it was his idea to do this collaboration. He died of a heart attack a couple of years after this recording. His name is just not coming to me. Oh, it's Michael Kamen.
