i didn't expect this many replies! right on!
well, first off i had been drinking a bit when i posted like 2 posts on this forum like last night, so it may have been excessively blunt. but i posted for a couple reasons, the main one being just frustration (obviously), because i joined this site like a year and a half ago, and i have browsed the musicians in my area fairly often, with out any luck in finding people to play with. now i was NOT by any means trying to say that older musicians, or some more traditional genres are not good, or not respectable, or have less merit than me, my music, my musical tastes, or people my age. but try to look at it from my perspective? as most of you that have responded made evident, you either don't believe that there is good music out there today, or are not interested in taking the time to find it, or are otherwise stuck in your ways, which is totally fine! but that's sort of a consistent thing with older people! and i just got out of a band a couple months ago with a 31 year old singer and a 33 year old drummer, and they did nothing but play the age card any time there was a discussion, and i can sing and play drums better than them both! when you guys were 21 and in bands, were you looking to play oldies with 30 and 40 year olds? probably not. and as for the people that are my age on here, most of them want to play the same stuff, so its a little frustrating. i mean i've been there where i only played blues, then rock, then metal, then i practiced nothing but shred classical and flamenco guitar, then i quit that and did punk and grunge, but something happened in the past couple years. i opened my eyes and started to search for things that haven't really been done, just anything i would consider progressive in anyway. i started to look at music not in a way where i would compare it to what i normally listen to and decide what i like better or worse but look at it from a perspective of why do the people the like this like this? what about it is desireable? so i started listening to hip-hop, techno, noise rock, jazz, reggae, death metal, digital hardcore, even gregorian chants, whatever i could find. i mean how can i actually know what i like about music if i haven't found all the potentially desireable aspects that man has created thus far? but hey! at least i got some people to listen to the only REALLY old song that i posted! and peaked some interest! haha. they weren't wrong when they say theres no such thing as bad publicity! heh. but yeah the song i have on here Double Eagle was all recorded 2 years ago in my bedroom in my parents basement with a shitty microphone and a practice amp at freakishly low volume and i wrote the drums electronically. and to be honest, its one of the more traditionally structured songs i've written, i put it up because i thought it was catchy. i have other stuff that i would consider more and less progressive. and i don't claim to be this prodigy musician, nor do i think my music is great. in fact i know that its not. i don't have the best equipment, and i only started playing anything other than guitar like 2 years ago, so collaborating all the instruments and writing lyrics, and song writing in general takes a lot of skill, and alot of creativity! there's a lot to learn as far as just writing a good song from all the old greats: the beatles, bob dylan, neil young, billy joel! but i think that things should keep moving forward. like i said, all the great artists from years ago didn't get there by focusing on their influences, or on what's already been done. they were so great because they LEARNED from them. i mean music is an artform people. as for some new music that in my honest opinion hasn't been done yet, a GREAT example is The Mars Volta, but alot of you might not be able to appreciate it. Beck is a great example, even though i know that he's older than 10 years, but his music is completely different every single album. Devendra Banhart is a bit more traditional, but still SO unique. the Fall Of Troy is an incredibly talented band. if you hear the intricate guitar parts and then realize that same guy is singing too?? nuts. Heatbox is SO talented, RATATAT is a really awesome instrumental duo. Sludge/Doom a good example would be Noothgrush, Electric Wizard, Eyehategod, Yob etc.
neanderpaul, i REALLY did enjoy your video! and your style is pretty unique, and you do it all yourself too! so i can relate. very nice.

i hope to hear some more criticism! i know its not perfect, but i wouldn't say a single one of these songs is ready to be released on a cd, but im ready to find me a band instead or sitting by myself recording ridiculous sh*t that noone's gonna like at all.
and don't be too butt hurt by my comment

we're all here just doin are own thing, and i know i don't know everything, or really all that much at all in the grand scheme of things. so there's something i can definitely learn from everybody! i just don't want to play in a band with some of them, and that's what i came on this site to do. don't hate me?
lol
peace
