Mixing/Mastering Question................

I'm a bit off the wall (Don't go there). :D

Anyway I like bringing the drums forward in the mix. I've heard some fantastic music and mixing from people both on here and other places too but here's the question:

I know bringing the drums forward dates things a little since most recordings are leveled off these days but what is you take on that? Does it date it or make it more unique or original in the making?

Cheers.

I fully intend to have our music mixed to sound the way WE want it to sound.
Question is:
Can you be happy with your music done the way it's done "these days" and only for that arbitrary reason?
The finished product should be as close to the way it sounds in your head as is humanly possible IMO.

I guess. So much I've laid to the wayside and gone for broke as regards this thing Sans. I know it can be altered in any case and to be honest its not as important as the music.

I do agree though, thanks for the reply.
Best.

Chippy.

You have confused me now. Bringing the drums forward, backwards, upside down or sideways has nothing to do with datin'

Its the overall mix and sound that dates a song.

Perhaps just my ears then RGM?

They always seem like background info to me these days unless you are playing in soul/funk/dance. Just my take of course but that's what I get from it? I know, I know there will be thousands pointed out to correct me but I'm really talking about prog rock over muffled drums that sound like.... Well not like drums ~ background info yeah?

I put up a new song called On The Edge. It uses a old style 50's dance beat. Is is dated?

Listening now.
Man I wish I had your talent at the back end let alone the song stuff RGM.
Too much modulation on Cymbals but that's probably in the mp3 mix right? They sound, not like cymbals...........

Nice Song Rgm and to comment a question you asked some time, long time ago....
Yes I would listen to your stuff again.

Chippy has an extreme memory. Pity my comps don't
Nice tune indeed.

Erm No.

RG your drums and your recordings are GREAT. I dont think your last track shows off your drum talent. I also understand that wasn't your point. GREAT playing RG.

If the style of music you're playing expects the drums to be in the background, and you want the drums more in the foreground, perhaps it's time to examine additional styles of music?
:)
Merry Christmas.

A good rule of thumb: if you want things in the foreground, reduce or eliminate reverb and delay. If the drums are recorded properly, you should be able to place them anywhere in the mix.

This is a question of taste, I do believe. As such, the answers will vary greatly from person to person.

Personally, & think it depends totally upon the feel you, the composer, are looking for in your song. There are cases in my material where the drums will take the forefront for a time. Many other times, they will hold a more supportive role.

it depends completely upon the particular piece of music for me. There is no hard & fast rule for this.

Thanks Phil/RM/Sans/Jimmy/Others.

So then to sum this up it doesn't matter at all right? I'm not bothered about dating stuff frankly, I don't care a hoot in fact but it was another question I had in my mind before I treck off completing things to some extent.

I worked in a design store some years ago. Pretty good at my Job I was but I never forgot the owner saying, "We design what we like". (Note not the customer). It took me some time to understand that so if then my music is an expression or an extra length of me?

Then so be it huh? :D

Ok all cleared up peeps, thanks for the replies.

Thanks for the kind words, I have always imagined what it would be like to get a hold of the "Stairway To Heaven" tracks just to see how many different ways you could get it to sound.
