What's wrong with just learning to groove with the music? It's not playing by ear really, but dancing with the keyboards. Sort of like putting your self in a trance-not psychodelic but definating touching the zone. And if you happen to sound like the song (dandy, Swell. and with a bag of chips).
I realize that the more technique, and theory you have, also the wider the musical territory at your disposal, and the faster one keys in to a song. But whatever happened to the solo of rampant disregard of "damn the torpedos" and full speed ahead.
Does anybody know what I'm talking about?
Don't get me wrong, I want to learn the ism's and the do'ims, but I also don't want to put a halt to my creations, in doing so. Is there a fine medium?

But, I have to disagree with you RG. Send me anything, and I' bet you I can put my musically uneducated, and ignorant ass into it, within a week. I've never done thing like this, and I'm talking about using my keyboardsand my God given talent...none parameters except a week. Length or complexity doen't matter. All that matters is that it fits fits fluently-zones in, and of course reasonable lengh throughou the song. Are yoiu game?

This may sound silly but you must use the "force" Luke. Music should be approached by sight. You should be able to see the beat as well as hear it. That being said, allow theory to help you get to that achivement. Theory isn't the key, it is the door- grasshopper. Get the key so that you can open the door. I wonder what the musical artists did back-in-the-day before theory? My guess is that the used theory much less back in those days. Learning theory is great but the time must come when you must wave good bye to theory and rely on your own expansive imagination.

I call it "Tapping into the musical ether" Some people might call it inspiration from God. One friend used to say it was the energy from Ghosts of dead musicians, I guess you could even call it "the Musical Force"

It's when you let your mind relax and tap into this "zone". You can play things far beyond your ability without even trying, play on stage without even thinking of the song you are playing or come up with great song ideas by just jamming. Not sure exactly what you would call it, never thought about it too much, I just do it on occasion.

I would think it has to do with using a part of your brain differently, like how an idiot savant uses his brain differently to be able to play perfect classical pieces with never taking a single lesson and just hearing a musical score once. Even some of the best trained musicians will never play as well as some of these idiot savants that never practice or had a single lesson in their life.

You can definitely get a "high" from it. In a way I think it is some sort of "force" .

Just like when some people enter a room and they have a way of giving of "bad vibes or negative energy" You can redirect this "good musicical Vibe" to people you are around and get their minds to tune into it as well.

I've even used this "energy" to affect other people I'm playing with to bring them into the same "zone" and used it to get crowds "in tune" to what we were playing.

I would imagine great artists have the ability to tune into this at will, and musical idiot savants have this ability too much, making it impossible to function in other parts of their life.

In my part of Penn's Woods, what you,re describing is called "JAMMIN"
Some may argue that to pull out all the stops and go with the flow is something that should be avoided until the time that one has developed "THE CHOPS"

however....

It's hard to define when that time may be, so , grab a handful of keys and "RIP 'ER UP!"

Maybe I got a little too deep on that one...yeah...just call it Jammin'!

I like to go by the numbers when recording ( which might be why I don't care about a lot of studio work) but when we play out, people want to hear our hearts and soul. The rest of the band need to hear trademark licks but there are always room to jam.
