Exactly, IMHO, that is what makes any form of music great.

Sentient Paradox wrote:I think the real issue is whether your reaching anyone's gut.

If you're managing to do that, in my opinion, nothing else really matters.

Nobody is ever going to reach everyone. There's always going to be someone who doesn't like what you do.

So what? It's true for all of us.

The best entertainers don't concern themselves with people who don't like what they do.

Reach who you can, and pay attention to them. That's what it's all about.

well that should rap up this thread!

I agree, life is indeed a competition. However, if you have a virtuoso without feeling ( That can't possibly exist ) you don't have a musician. Virtuosity is just the degree of achievement that a passionate musician desires to acquire. Virtuosity determines the degree of clarity that a musician can express themself to an audience. A "virtuoso" who can make the simplist arpeggio seem spiritual and passionate is a musician- not the other way around.

Someone mentioned Jason Becker. One of my very favorites. I think he has amazing phrasing and that's kinda hard to come across. Check him out if you haven't. There's definitely some emotion in there.

Oh and Crip, haha. I'll give you a good example of overdoing it. Yngwie and the almighty Dio did a cover of Aerosmith's Dream On. When I first saw the title, I'll tell you the truth: my balls tingled out of happiness lol
Just as I expected, Dio did a fine job of the cover and added his spin on the high vocal parts. Now, Yngwie tried to squeeze in as many notes as fckin possible between the verses and on top of the piano. At some points, there were some tasteful licks, I must admit.
Don't get me wrong; he's talented as hell, but it is possible to overdo it.

Dio is good people.
I saw him in Portland a few years ago, and I must say, despite the fact that he must be approaching his 70th birthday he still sound like he did back in the Holy Diver days, and is rocking out on stage like there is no tomorrow. I tip my imaginary hat to him.

Definitely. He doesn't have the same range on the Rainbow records or Heaven and Hell, but that's understandable.

Great video for a laugh. Wasted over eight minutes of my life. The real question is...can he play with his mouth closed and not make so many faces.

yah. you could easily replace the amplifier with a used car and get the same "cheese" effect. A little smile, a little putzing, then the grande arm-swing finale after every selling point.

Probably should have reported that video. The stuff he was doing to those guitars was just wrong. He was like a creepy guitar pedophile.

LOL... that's exactly what I did one night with my classic rock band "Decades" I hate Neil young but the crowd loves it... I kinda got yelled at when I decided to do "Halenesque" leads in a Neil young tune... Forgive the video and sound as it was done on the cheapest of digicams but you get the idea! Check out the lead in the end... I even went so far as playin' with my toofies.... Hey... the crowd liked it though...
