1000 years ago we thought the earth was flat and the center of everything. 100 years ago we thought the Milky Way was the only galaxy in the universe (today we know it's only one of billions). 10 years ago we didn't know there were planets outside of our solar system. Who knows what we'll discover next week, a year from now or a century from now.

Science is the search for truth, but as the saying goes, "you can't handle the truth!"

I can handle it. Might not want to handle it but I can handle it.

The bible said the earth was round long before man realized it..

Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

That might be what was meant, but more likely refers to the illusion that the horizon makes (when you can see it). For example, when you're out at sea it looks like the horizon is circular. A circle is just a line with every point the same distance from the center, which is not the same as "round". A ball is round (three dimensions), a circle has only two dimensions.

Some translations call it the globe of the earth.

The paths of the sea (modern shipping lanes discovered a couple of centuries ago)

And fresh water springs in the ocean (discovered not long ago)

also can be found in the bible.

The bible also says the earth "hangs upon nothing"
Job 26:7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.

Paul. That means nothing. It's sketchy at best and belongs in Tombraider or Indiana Jones.

I realize it's a quote and I think someone said that because we had the religious thread it would not spread. Pardon the pun. Actually if you read a few scriptures from Ancient Egypt you might find the exact same thing said.

I know this feeling Bob.
It is ................................ indesribable.

Holy crap, a ghost went through you?? That does sound undesireable.

J/K, as I write this a trillion ghost particles (neutrinos) just went through my pinkie finger.
You can belittle or make fun of anything, but YOU weren't there and YOU did not experience it. EVERYBODY in the room felt it. It had absolutely nothing to do with mass hysteria of any kind. I was an absolute non-believer (and still am to a degree for other reasons) invited to the church by a woman I was trying to date at the time. When it happened I was a stone cold observer. I come from a non-religious, scientific family. You could scoff at the experience I felt all you want, and I don't blame you, but what I experienced WAS indescribable. I was the only person in the room NOT INVOLVED AT ALL with the religious fervor. I was detached from it all, and yet it went through me just as it went through everybody there. MAKE FUN AND BELITTLE ALL YOU WANT, the holy ghost IS REAL. I said in another post that I BELIEVE IN PEOPLE WHO HONESTLY BELIEVE. If untold MILLIONS of people over the last 2,000 years have experienced something similar to me, then I would say there's a VERY good chance it exists. What more "data" do you need then the experience of the masses?

You think so?

I don't believe that for a second.

I think science is only limited by technology and more importantly - TIME. Science can't learn everything there is to know in an instant. It takes time; it's a PROCESS that gathers information over TIME. It's fair to say we know more about our world and our universe than we knew 100 years ago. And 100 years ago, they knew more than the previous 100 years.

It's entirely possible that given enough time, science will figure everything out.
It seems to me that the more science reveals, then the more it shows how much we DO NOT KNOW. Every scientific discovery reveals more mystery. I don't believe science will figure everything out. The more we know the less we know.

You're right Bob, science will never be able to determine what happened (if anything) before the Big Bang. God him/herself would have to appear on Conan before we would be able to know that.

But in my experience, the more science discovers, the less some people want to know. They can't be bothered with it or it just doesn't seem important to them. There's also a very real fear of science among some people, and this is very concerning. We Americans are already behind many other nations in science, math and other disciplines, and our kids are not keeping up. This country won't fall to invaders; it will be lost by us.

There are many scientists themselves who fear some of the advances in science. For example one of the scientists who created the atomic bomb said "We are all sons of bitches now." Of course he was referring to the future possible obliteration of us by us. Some of the top genetic scientists are saying that we are advancing too fast in genetic research. What will be the long term effects of humans genetically engineering future humans? Will everyone "program" their children to have blonde hair and blue eyes? What effect will choosing traits have on humans thousands of years from now? The problem is we DON'T KNOW THE MATH. There's so many factors that it's impossible to tell what is going to happen. It is also possible that genetic engineering will produce a race of humans who CANNOT SURVIVE WITHOUT CONSTANT MEDICAL INTERVENTION. It is entirely possible that autism is a result of damage caused by vaccines. There is an ever increasing number of autisitic people being born. Maybe we are ALREADY seeing the deterioration of humans CAUSED by humans.
Fearing science is healthy IMO. Things are accelerating too rapidly. It's possible that the geometric increase in scientific data is outstrippping our ability to SAFELY PROCESS it.
As far as our country falling behind the rest of the world in science and math I believe that is partly our bureaucratic red tape getting in the way. Our government needs to strip itself of a massive amount of paperwork, unnecessary taxes, unnecessary fees, unnecessary licenses, etc. Our entire system needs to be wiped clean and we need to start over and GO BACK TO A TIME WHEN READING, WRITING, AND ARITHMETIC WERE TAUGHT AT THE EARLIEST LEVELS OF OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM. We also need to get back to a rigorous physical education system, and also TEACH MUSIC AT THE EARLIEST LEVELS. Music has been proven to greatly increase learning of other subjects. Our children are fat and out-of-shape. Phys ed and gym should be re-introduced. Healthy bodies and healthy minds go hand-in-hand.

I must agree with 99% of that Bob. I've wondered what the rise in Cesarian births means for our future; will women someday be unable to have children without medical intervention? Perhaps nature (or God?) doesn't intend those children to survive. Are we circumventing evolution? Those are scary thoughts to me.

Eh...I think we've been actively trying to either legislate evolution or to circumnavigate it or force it into new directions for decades.

Anything to make us what we aren't.

A guy isn't s'posed to look at a woman on the job as if she were anything other than a guy.

You aren't s'posed to do anything but drink or pray to alter your reality.

I could list the things we do to change ppl for days...I blame women for all of it...well, & Democrats...

I think the thing I have learned the most on this forum is the bible, as someone is always quoting it in here.

Not one to start anything, But if God loves all of us unconditionally, then why does anyone ever go to hell? If he loves us that much and gave his son for us then why would he make us suffer?

Just a thought

Maybe we are just a big antfarm that he plays with or something, I dont know.

What if when you die it just goes black and thats it?

I guess thats why I have to have Faith that there is something more! Otherwise Im probably over half way there, where ever that is.
