In the studio, I use a cheap Korg GA-10. I bought this thing wayyy back when I started playing, and it still works! :D

Playing live, I use the tuner built in to my Ampeg combo amp.

If I need to retune WHILE I'm playing a song live, I adjust by ear as quickly as possible with my right (picking) hand while still hammering notes with my left hand, so that I don't really miss any parts of the song. Once the song ends, I'll hit the MUTE switch on the amp, tune, and move on.

NOW A UNIQUE IDEA.

HOW ABOUT A GUITAR THAT DOESN'T GO OUT OF TUNE EXCEPT FOR STRING WEAR AND BIG TEMP CHANGES, NICE IDEA HUH???

That would be fantastic!! :D

As a bassist, I don't know much about locking tuners. What do you guitarists think about locking tuners as it pertains to this thread? Do they help, or is there much of a difference?

Mine helps immensely. But, they only work well if you understand how to keep them set up or have a guitar tech who can understand it for you. :) They are a double edged sword, like anything else. They'll stay in tune throughout the whole show, but if you break a string you have to change guitar right then, even in the middle of a song, as the tension changes tremendously on the other strings.

For a price you can put a set of SS frets and a Buzz Fieten system on your guitar and it eliminates the variations up and down the neck. A friend of mine did that and you can play chords up and down the neck without going out of tune. I dont know how this system works but it does, Goingi, so if you want to fix the problems you are having staying in tune then this is for you.

I have very sensitive ears and really dont have any problem staying in tune, is it perfect no. Life isnt perfect, so am I going to dwell on this anymore, NO.

Have a great weekend

I use the tuner that comes on my TC Electronics G-Major. Because the screen is big and easy to see. But it's not a great tuner; can't really get lower notes like a Drop D.

What I want to get is a Korg DTR-2000 Rackmount. Looks like it has a nice big screen. Foot-pedal tuners don't float for me; I hate looking at the floor. To small to see anything.

I can tune to standard if someone gives me an E. But not on my own. I'm not tone deaf, per se, but I'm a pretty much on the opposite end of the spectrum from all those "perfect pitch" folks.

I can tune pretty close by ear but have gotten spoiled by technology. When I have to tune by ear I think of "Rock & Roll" to get A, works pretty good.

JW MAYBE YOU MISSED THE POINT. I DON'T EVER HAVE A PROBLEM AND THIS WAS JUST MEANT TO ENLIGHTEN SOME YOUNGER PLAYERS.

I PUT NEW STRINGS ON MY GUIT EVERY 10 to50 PLAYING HOURS depending on the situation and how lazy I'm being. ANY concerts ,,,NEW. PERIOD.

OTHER THAN THAT, ITS TUNED I CAN PICK IT UP AND PLAY IT AND NOT WASTE A MINUTE TUNING IT.

AS far as far as tuning goes once their strung , their strung. the only time I might have a problem is major temperature changes, 60 to80, or if i'm careless and drop or bang the tuners.

With new strings I can play ANY chords all the way up to fret 22 and be perfectly in tune. I dont have any problem at all I was just TRYING TO SHARE with some of the younger players the easy way to get over the frustrations of GUITAR TUNING.

SANS put up a good performance of his tune , EXCEPT when they recorded it nobody had fresh ears and said ,,,that guit doesn't sound right. THAT SUCKS.

THATS ALL. IF YOU DON'T WANT ME TO GO ON I WON'T ..... YOU GO HELP SANS,AND THE YOUNG PLAYERS GETTING FRUSTRATED BECAUSE THEIR GUTARS STILL SOUND LIKE CRAP EVEN AFTER THEY USE THEIR TUNERS. I WAS JUST TRYING TO EXPLAIN WHY. SORRY.

PS. IF YOU LISTEN TO MY PLAYING , CAREFULLY ,THERE ARE ABOUT TEN HARMONIC STEPS IN BETWEEN EVERY HALF TONE, THAT ARE RECOGNIZED BY THE HUMAN EAR. JUST LIKE SLIDE PLAYERS I'M NOT AFRAID TO USE THEM .
SOME PEOPLE LIKE IT , SOME PEOPLE DON'T. STILL COMES DOWN TO TUNING.
Oh,,,, if I have too, I can still play straight up CLEAN.

And I have the innate ability to hit every WRONG one. :)
Lots of young players don't realize the importance of knowing their instrument. So many different nuances to playing that can make a guitar sound awesome or horrible. Our singer's 13 year old son plays in a band and he's pretty good for his age. We played a benefit a while back and they opened for us. He's got a PRS, but while he was playing, it was sounding out of tune when he'd play higher on the neck. Afterwards, I was talking to his dad about it and told him it sounded like the intonation was out and offered to check it out. Well, it's got the tailpiece that has no adjustments, it's just supposed to be right, I guess. Checked the intonation and it was fine. Turns out, when he plays, he doesn't always press the strings straight down and causes that note to be a bit sharp. I think that's a common problem with guitarists young and old. It ain't the guitars fault every time.

Do you mean Drop C or B? Because Drop D isn't all that low; you got your D string for a guide.

Well, I got the palm-sized Korg as well as the amp's built-in one.
