Well... I hope you get your drum situation figured out.
As for bass I'm still trying to figure it out. I get some ideas here and there to compliment the songs with it. I've been spending more time on it thinking it through. I use to rush through, follow the root and leave it at that. It helps having one lying around even if it's just an old Squier.

The Black Crowes are my ideal band... Love em. Nice blend of blues/country/rock. A couple of guitars, piano/organ and a singer that's got some soul.

when multitrack recording i find the WHEN i add the bass to be pretty important. if i lay it in too early it's real easy for me to overplay and not leave enough room for other stuff too happen.

pretty sure McCartney often would add his bass lines pretty late in the recording (overdubbing) process. i think i read that somewhere. mike, can you verify that?

I've got no idea about Macca's recording methods. I tend to add bass after all the rhythm (drums, guitars, keys) parts have been done as it lets me put the bass wher eI think its needed - reinforcing the basic beat, a descending bass line, etc.

I have tried (several times) to start with the bass... but my knowledge is too shallow to carry a song with it as the lead. The guitars win out.
But I think it's more of a measurement of where I'm at with it right now...

This was suppose to be bass driven... it didn't stay that way for very long but it's not done yet either so I'm going to work on the bass line some more and drop out some of the guitars.

that tune could use some bass 'walking' lines in it. At first I thought it was a surf instrumental, but then figured out you just haven't done any vocals on it. I wouldn't drop any guitars until you have the vocals done and start working on the full mix. there's kind of a phase thing going on between right side and left side rhythm guitars, do you have them panned 100%?

That phase thing is the VOX tremelo/reverb effect. Not much control over speed and little control over the reverb on it.
And yeah... it grew some lyrics as well.
I'm going to get back to it soon and work on the bass lines... there's still some hope in it.
