Scott - point him to the guitarfetish.com site. Everyone says the GFS pickups are great, and they have a number of different models including hot Alnicos.

I've never played a git with them... what don't you like about them? Too hot? Weak in the mids... some of the complaints I've heard about them.

A lot of guys do use them and they sound great:

I had active electronics in my 67 SG for a while but eventually reverted to stock. The advantage is a hot signal with really low noise and very sophisticated onboard EQ. The disadvantage, switching to another (passive) guitar means totally resetting your amp... or bringing two amps. In the end I realized a bit of hum combined with classic vintage tone was a worthwhile compromise and suited my playing style. I guess I wasn't that sophisticated after all.

Active pick ups just don't rub me the right way.

That and I watched my one buddy struggle with his and the ever present 9 volt battery issues.

I have no intentions of placing a fresh 9 volt in my guitar every time I wish to play it.

Do you guys copper shield your guitar... pick up cavities?

No, I mistakenly learned to love my 60 cycle hum.

I advocate the use of copper shielding the body cavity but so far I haven't done it.

They say it's really only needed on a strat, but again this is out of my realm of 1st hand experience since I rarely play anything but a strat these days.

Anyone else know for sure?

Well Gang, looks like I get 3-4 more days to finsh my tracks and wait for a PH call to tell me whether the owner will sell this gtr. I called that Cat in South point OH about the Deluxe and left a message. No word yet. Yeah Scott, like you, the NECK is everything to me. I went to the Pied Piper (used to be one the largest on the E cst) and played a few MIA standards with the 9.5 and just cant go that much radius.. Jim said the CP and DP have been on backorder forever. Sadly, that store doesnt carry a 10th of what they used to carry and its only 1/4 as big. This dilemma wouldnt have happened 30 yrs ago. FARLIGAN NET!.... Gigs have been slow and I only have 8 students right now so $$$ is tighetrna mouses ear so no MIAs' for me. But yeah Scott, rebuildin that gtr around that neck sounds like a plan for sure. Those PUPs do suck compared to the strats I played today so If Im able to buy this thing, THAT will be the first project I take on.The suspense is gonna KILL ME but, at least this is better than waitin on a call from your lawyer about whether your goin to jail or not :P . Only exp Ive had with active pups was on a bass and they were EMGs. Great for funk, groove stuff!...I posted a pic on my PF of my 74 MIA strat. Never bonded with that gtr in 75 but sure AS HELL wish I had it now. Preeshate everyone keepin the conversation going. Im learnin alot!!!

Johnny7 and Slacker seem to dabble quite a bit in guitar/amp work... is it just a matter of lining the cavities with the copper tape or is there more to it?

Ah I just meant "is there any validity to doing it to a non-stratocaster".

Generally you do want to copper shield the body cavity of just about any strat (eek as far as I know).

John, the pick ups are easy. Either buy them or just look for a loaded pick guard up on CL. I just saw a few, 25$. Just avoid the MIM pickups, they are a complete waste of time.

I even keep a spare set of MIJ stock strat pickups. I was going to load them into a lefty 04' MIM strat body I have but I decided I hate that lefty body. (I already sold the neck, just trying to dump the loaded body now)

http://www.strat-talk.com/forum/pickup- ... k-ups.html

There is a picture of them about 1/2 way down the page from a poster named "oldboy".

Check them out and avoid at all costs. If you see any pickup that looks like that, KNOW that they must go and you need a new set if you want your strat to sound as good as she looks or even to sound reasonable.

Some like them, but I have no idea why and I will never tolerate that on a guitar I plan to use even one time.

I've only heard of people shielding the body cavities for single-coil pickups (Tele, Strat), and you need to solder a wire from the foil to the common/ground on the output jack, of course.

I have active pickups in my Hohner V bass. I change the battery very rarely. The key with this fiddle is to unplug it when I'm done or the battery can drain.

My strat on the other hand, doesn't need the extra boost.

That said, I'm thinking of getting a new six string with EMG pickups. <sigh> I wanted to die poor...
