I was thinking of maybe High-jacking a couple of those forums and see if I could get some talk going on Marshall vs Fender or maybe Beatles vs Stones! :P

Marshall plus Fender working pretty good for us.

If I had to choose based on overall musical catalog . . . STONES

Ahhh yes the age old question... Stones or Beatles?
I've always been on the fence about the pair... On one hand you had 3 great singer song writer collaborators and on the other you had back to back to back... some of the Best Blues Rock-n-Roll that ever existed.

But during the Exile tour... the Stones imo were probably the greatest Rock-n-Roll band ever. They were R&R! Blood and sweat, booze and drugs beautiful women and the jangley Blues and Acoustic guitars! Keef and Taylor were at their best during those few years together.
Just amazing the old footage from those shows.

He had his hands (and cowbell) on some of the Best R&R ever created.
Beggars Banquet, Let it bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile what a run they were on.
That aside Some Girls will always be one of my all-time favorites... their last really good Album imo. I think it saved their azzes! :P

Never owned a Beatles album myself, and only one from the Stones. Some may find that unusual but as I grew up I lived in my parent's home. The only stereo system I owned, the only environment I was able to fully appreciate my musical preferences was my car.
From my 16 th birthday, I ate slept, and did chores in my Fathers home, and I "lived" in my car. I remember the guys, slightly older than I whom had their turntables suspended from the ceiling by chains so it would not skip from people moving about, dancing, ETC in what was predominately pier and beam constructed homes.
It was the beginning of the end of the "peaceful drug culture" where the buying and selling of weed and other substances was done in a social setting.
There was no buy and run at the car wash or parking lot. We would gather, eat, drink, share our "flavors", listen to music as the focal point of our evening, and just enjoy one another for company. At the end of an evening, it was not unusual for the women folk to leave the room as the guys conducted business. We all had firearms because we were "country boys", but they stayed in the cars as no one felt threatened. We were safe, happy, and blessed. It all changed dramatically here in the 80's thanks to the Colombians and the assorted criminals whom began to prey on the less violent and more honorable dealers.
From that to dealing with the Mexican Mob in city parks where the open display of weaponry was expected.

I don't know if it was ever like that in other areas of the country.
But the change was inevitable I suppose.

I certainly agree with your evaluation of the best Stones albums - with one exception: Some Girls. For whatever reason, I missed that one (except for the title song) so I guess I'll have to look it up and listen.

I'd note there were a few good things on Steel Wheels as well.

Just read Keith's book and he'd seem to agree with you. I did get a little tired of his drug adventures and would have preferred more on the music!
Have to admit though, shooting his way out of a drug rip-off in NYC was a bit over the top even for Keith. 8) He just acts - screw the consequences. I like that or least, understand it.

Mick Taylor could play some slide! This should make you smile, On Down the Line: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B51A6bcMeDY

Speaking of which: My brother gave me a Dobro. I have it in the shop being set up. From Dean. I think it might be a good one - certainly does ring and has a pickup too.

That was excellent Mike I hadn't seen that live version before. And I've watched a lot of the 72 Texas concert footage. TY
8)

As for Mick his contributions over those (4 yrs?) it's like he brought them to where Keith wanted to be. A badazz Blues/Rock band! He was smart enough to know to get the hell out of the band before the drugs killed him.
And not to take anything away from Brian... he did some great things when he wasn't too F'd up as well.
One of his last contributions was No Expectation. Love that tune.

I've read some excerpts from Keef's book just haven't bought it yet...

A Dobro huh... nice man. Make that thing sing!
I've never owned a Dobro would be a nice tool to have lying around.

Some Girls reminds me of some of the earlier tunes with Far away Eyes Beast of Burden Respectable When the Whip comes down chit like that! :P
