Was just in Columbus OH two weeks ago, and left the day before the 11th Anniversary of Diamond Darrel's assassination at a local bar there. He was murdered on the same day as John Lennon, Dec 8

What a waste of amazing guitar talent.

I knew Darrel when he was skinny, before he could grow whiskers. He would wear spandex to High School. Unlike other members of the band, I never saw fame go to his head. He was always cool.

His dad, Jerry, was their producer and he also produced a record for my band, Side Effex. I had a local cable access show called "Dallas Music Magazine" and produced/edited their glam-rock videos with Jerry in the late 80s when Terry was the singer.

Pantera exploded onto the world scene after singer Terry Lee quit and they replaced him with Phil Anselmo, but almost as soon as Anselmo was gone things went really far south.

A day that will live in infamy....

I always thought he was called Dimebag Darrel instead of Diamond Darrell..Pantera was ok, but there is better

sad how it went down....and hopefully this won't degenerate into yet another discussion on gun violence.

like many gtrsts of that genre (and others) i can respect the amount technique there, but the playing and what i see as lack of soul just don't get it for me. (no hate letters pls...that's just my opinion)

In Pantera's glam days he was Diamond Darrel, a clean-cut skinny kid with no whiskers trying to be Eddie Van Halen

I'm right there with ya, never got the aggressive testosterone of hardcore metal.

But Darrell was faster than any guitar player in Texas (which is saying something!) by the time he was 14

That's called Hair Metal. It's definitely 50% or more a direct descendant of glam in the 70s (Bowie, T-Rex, Lou Reed, NY Dolls, etc...) The glam of Motley Crue and Poison had kind of gone to the way side by the time Great White had their breif heyday (mostly playing covers, if I remember correctly).
