Sure Mike, I hear you.
But you know, like you said, a sample sometimes isn't indicative of what's really going on.
I want to hear a sample of anything, just so I have an idea of what is going on. BUT I reserve judgement until I've heard them up close and personal, nothing on what they're playing or singing. THEN I know the truth.
Plenty of people are a little tone deaf. Their samples can be great, but when you get them to do their thing, that's when the "cats start crying". lol

As for Mr. Stinky? Well truth is I did have to go somewhere about 2.5 hours away at one point. We simply rolled all the windows completely down. At one point, he complained he was cold and the other 3 people(including myself) in the car just ignored him.
He was a weird dude, but MAN could he play a bass.
lol I used to attack his jeans jacket with Lysol when he wasn't looking.
And then he'd look around and say very nonchalantly, "why does it smell like a hospital in here"? lol
He was a really good guy though. Honest to a fault, a weirdo no doubt, but was a good human and a fantastic musician. He never lost his cool and always was smiling.
I enjoyed him as a person and wanted to blast him about his ODOR, but never quite had enough nerve to hurt his feelings.
Besides when they play that well, you don't want to rock the boat.
I actually bought him a new pair of sneakers for his birthday (cause they smelled too) but I never told him and I never was mean to him.
Doug was just a cool dude. He reminded me of Kramer from Seinfield, but had even bigger mental issues but a heart of gold.
And as usual, he had a bad end. He got run down by a hit and run driver.
All the good ones die young, the rest of us just hang around and suffer.
My one buddy complained after that long ride we took the one day that he had to fumigate his car and less than 3 seconds later he muttered that he missed Doug as well.
Even now, considering that bunch and I don't play anymore, I'm guessing that maybe Doug was what kept us together as a band.
God Bless him, that smelly jelly bean!!! He's probably got people in Heaven holding their nose as well. lol But no one will say anything because no one wants to upset "the Doug" still.
