Electric drum set questions

Im looking to buy my first electric drum set. I basically just need this for when I need to practice quietly, which is more frequently then not. I know I can get silencer pads, but the idea of an electric drum set to thinker with sounds like a lot of fun.

I dont know anything about electric drum sets. Basically I need to find something for around $600 max thats not a piece of crap. Any suggestions?

Also, someone was telling me to just kinda create my own by buying the heads and a cheap brain, any suggestions on this?

Thanx

@ RGM.
Can you get or add on extra pads to these devices? Will it need a bigger brain and what is your take on the homebuilt kits that some people make?

It's just a mate and I were talking about just this yesterday.

Yes

I only recommend this kit as the best BASIC electronic drums for very good semi-pro and DEMO use. Just one note "Do not use electronic drums for jazz"

Sounds problematic

As with any ED's I do not use the ones with rubber pads. After about 30 min of play your sticks will heat up the rubber and they will get a sticky feel to them.

Just one other note. If you use ED's with a band you must "and I repeat" you must use the drums with their own amp and a pair 15" speakers angled directly behind the drums towards the band or they will fail. There is nothing more screwed up than hearing drums coming through the mains and monitors ONLY

Thanks RGM.
That was my biggest concern which you answered for me thank you. The rubber pads I mean. I hate this little DD50 for that, there just doesn't seem to be the response time no matter what I do with it?

Ok thanks for this.
Chippy.

At the Channel 8 Studios I have a domestic Japanese TAMA eight piece Rockstar with all older Zildjian cymbals a four piece 1968 Ludwig Hollywood Rocker with very rare Paiste formula II cymbals "They were made for the drumer in the 70's band, Crow" and last but not least The Roland TD12's with a couple of SPD 8's added. Its funny because the only time I use the acoustic sets is if I am playin' outdoors.

I have performed on electronic sets. I have found that the triggers tend to break and have to be replaced. It all depends on the person's personal choice. I do perform on both acustic and electronic sets. I perfer acustic over the electric one, but that's my choice.

I've used electronic drums since 1979 and even though today's generation of electronic drums are more advanced with sound quality, there just isn't "that feel" that you get when you use an acoustic kit!
Today I play an acoustic kit with triggers on them which trigger the sounds of an Alesis DMPro module and an Akai Z4 hardware sampler so that way I can get the best of both worlds. :D
